The Magpies were not level for very long as Amad struck with an equally eye-catching drive to reclaim the lead. Lewis Hall did threaten a late Newcastle rally with a stunning goal in stoppage time. The Red Devils did just about enough to secure a vital three points. Defeat in the finale and in the FA Cup final would see them lose out.
The youngster has enjoyed a stunning breakout season. While he has earned plenty of plaudits, he really didn’t need to do much at all to score his fourth goal of the season. The ball found its way to the midfielder in the middle of the penalty area midway through the first-half. It was arguably the easiest goal of his fledgling career so far.
Who was the man-of-the-match in Man United’s win vs Newcastle? The Brazilian has endured a number of tricky moments when tasked with more defensive duty. And with the in-form Alexander Isak to keep an eye on against Newcastle, another tricky evening was expected. But Casemiro managed to silence his doubters with a brilliant display.
He produced a vital tackle on Gordon in the first-half before clearing a Dan Burn header off of the line. Man United will certainly desire a more natural central defender going forwards but it is positive to finally see Casemiro adapt to the role. Gordon thought he should have had a spot-kick after being taken down in the penalty area. It took a combination of Casemiro and Sofyan Amrabat to stop him.
The Brazilian’s challenge was clean but the same cannot be said of the on-loan midfielder. He scraped a toe down Gordon’s Achilles, pictures afterwards showing the Newcastle star left with a hole in his sock. Neither the referee nor VAR deemed the challenge worthy of a penalty, however. Jacob Murphy produced an inch-perfect cross for the forward, who struck clinically beyond Andre Onana.
As Newcastle attempted to defend a corner, the ball fell to the Ivorian. Without hesitation, he crashed a stunning effort into the back of the net. The goal was his first-ever in the Premier League. Having started on the bench, Hojlund was introduced with just minutes remaining.
He picked up the ball on the edge of the area, manufactured himself some room before expertly finding the bottom corner for his 15th goal of the season. It is true he has lacked some consistency at times this season but he has certainly had an impact – something he will be aiming to continue next term.
