Mark Clattenburg leaves role as referee analyst for Nottingham Forest after criticism from Gary Neville

Mark Clattenburg has resigned from his position as the referee analyst for Nottingham Forest. His appointment was aimed at improving understanding and relationships with match officials.

The club publicly criticized the officiating for not awarding what they believed were three penalties and questioned the appointment of VAR official Stuart Atwell, who reportedly supports a rival team. Clattenburg later denounced the officiating at Goodison Park, referring to the decision as a “hat-trick of howlers,” which did not sit well with his former employers.

In a statement, Clattenburg expressed pride in his work with Nottingham Forest, performed under a consultancy agreement with Referee Consultant Ltd. However, it became clear that his services caused unintended friction and hindered the club rather than helping.

He also noted being personally targeted by certain individuals and pundits, expressing regret at the unexpected reactions and outcomes. Clattenburg expressed gratitude to Nottingham Forest and wished them well for the future.

Additionally, he called for accountability, suggesting that those who question integrity and label VAR officials as cheats should distance themselves from such statements to maintain credibility with referees. The announcement concludes with an invitation to join a new WhatsApp community for Mirror Football content and special offers.
