Portsmouth police investigate ‘mindless acts of violence’ at pub trashed during promotion party.

Police in Portsmouth are investigating various criminal activities that occurred during the city’s celebrations following the football team’s promotion to the Championship. The celebrations turned chaotic, with reports of violence, racial abuse, theft, and criminal damage. The disturbances began at an O’Neill’s pub in Southsea, where a large number of people had gathered. The disorder continued into the surrounding streets and other establishments.

Chief Inspector Paul Markham, district commander for Portsmouth, emphasized that the majority of attendees were there to enjoy the occasion and did not engage in criminal behavior. He stressed the importance of identifying and holding accountable those responsible for the disturbances. Police are actively working to gather evidence and statements, as well as review CCTV footage to investigate the offenses committed during the disorder. The police also mentioned that they are taking the upcoming football match into consideration and will review their resources and plans for the event in light of the recent disturbances.

They urged anyone with information or concerns to come forward and assist with the investigation.
