Portsmouth earns Championship promotion after 12-year absence with two games left – Mirror Online

Portsmouth have achieved promotion to the Championship after 12 years, securing the title of League One champions with two games remaining. In 2012, the club had been relegated to the fourth tier amidst financial struggles, but a fan-funded takeover by the Pompey Supporters Trust helped steer the team back on track. After four years, Portsmouth secured their promotion as champions in the 2016/2017 season.

Despite two unsuccessful play-off attempts, they have now made a triumphant return to the Championship. Under the leadership of manager John Mousinho, who took over from Danny Cowley midway through last season, Portsmouth has emerged as the standout team in League One. With only four losses and 27 wins, they clinched the championship with two games left to play.

The crucial moment came in a thrilling victory over Barnsley, where two late goals secured the necessary points for promotion and ignited wild celebrations at Fratton Park. The draw between Bolton and Shrewsbury confirmed Portsmouth’s unassailable lead at the top of the table, with the opportunity to finish the season with 100 points if they win their remaining fixtures. The upcoming season will mark their return to the second tier after a decade, following their relegation in the 2011/2012 season.

Following their promotion from League Two, Portsmouth was acquired by Michael Eisner, who congratulated the team and everyone involved in the achievement. The club and its fans are now gearing up for a celebratory period, reflecting on the remarkable journey that has led them back to the Championship.
