Martin Tyler confirms surgery to save iconic voice in ‘frightening’ situation.

Tyler underwent surgery at St. George’s Hospital to rectify keratosis on his larynx, preventing permanent damage. Following a successful procedure, he received assistance from the hospital’s speech and language voice therapy team to regain his iconic voice.

The loss of his voice not only posed financial implications due to his lengthy career, but also the fear of not being able to socialize. Tyler found it difficult to attend events and had to either hide his condition or disclose it to close and trusted individuals.

Reflecting on his treatment, the now 78-year-old expressed gratitude for St. George’s Hospital and praised the healthcare professionals for their care and humor, which played a significant role in maintaining his spirits. He emphasized the significance of not taking his voice for granted, having rediscovered its value after treatment.

Despite the challenges, Tyler has managed to do 40 commentaries since his treatment, describing it as a miracle and highlighting the newfound appreciation for his voice.
