Switzerland produced an impressive performance in knocking out defending European champions Italy, setting up a potential last eight clash with England at Euro 2024. The Swiss, who had previously only made the quarter-finals of the tournament once before, ended the Azzurri’s hopes of defending their crown in Berlin. Remo Freuler gave Switzerland a half-time lead before Ruben Vargas put them in control of the game early in the second half. Italy, who needed a late goal against Croatia to ensure passage from the group stage, offered little and were second best for much of the game in the German capital.
Much attention was given to the perceived easier half of the knockout draw, with England being tipped to make the final. However, Switzerland showed they will provide stern competition if the Three Lions see off Slovakia. The Swiss are yet to lose at the Euros and had opportunities to go ahead early in the match. Breel Embolo missed a chance before Freuler’s opener, which took a deflection en route to the back of the net.
Vargas then doubled their lead early in the second half with an impressive effort, firmly placing Switzerland in control. Italy began pressing after going two goals down and came close with a Gianluca Scamacca effort hitting the post. However, that was as close as they came to mounting a comeback. In addition to the match report, there seems to be a promotion or offer included at the end of the text.
