Alex Ferguson, a proud Scot, was seen posing for photos with members of the Tartan Army in the city center near the Marienplatz square, where Scottish fans had gathered before their Euro 2024 opener against hosts Germany. Thomas Johnston, from Drumlithie, expressed his admiration for Ferguson’s politeness and said that it was a great opportunity to meet a Scottish legend.
Tens of thousands of Tartan Army members had traveled to Germany to support their team, with many more expected to watch the game from special venues set up in various cities back home. Scotland had never beaten Germany in a competitive fixture and had only won one of their last nine matches.
Speaking at a media conference at the Munich Arena, coach Steve Clarke stated that all his players were eager to be selected for the upcoming match and emphasized the importance of showing respect for the host nation while maintaining confidence in their own abilities. First Minister John Swinney expressed his delight at Scotland’s return to European competition and extended his best wishes to the team and the supporters.
Political leaders from various parties also wished the team good luck ahead of the match.
