Owners Knighthead Capital have outlined their vision for a new base after acquiring 48 acres on the city’s east side. The American investment house is re-developing the former Wheels site in Bordesley.
They are planning to build a new stadium, with discussions about a 40,000 to 60,000-capacity arena, along with state-of-the-art training facilities and housing. Details of the development will be unveiled on Tuesday by Knighthead co-chief executive and club chairman Tom Wagner, along with chief executive officer Garry Cook.
A spokesman stated that the goal for the sports quarter is to become a globally recognizable sporting and entertainment location. The club is aiming to have a world-class stadium, training facilities for men and women, a new academy, community pitches, and commercial space to support local businesses, all within walking distance of the city center.
The acquisition of the former Wheels site is seen as an important step in making this vision a reality and is expected to bring global interest to the club and Birmingham as a whole. Knighthead Capital acquired 45.64 per cent of the Midlands side, as well as their current St Andrews’ home.
However, their first season at the helm of the club has not gone as expected. Beginning the season promisingly and reaching as high as fifth in early October, the team has since struggled.
With the club currently in the relegation zone with five matches remaining in the Championship season, the future for Birmingham is uncertain.
