The German giants, Bayern Munich, are set to travel to north London for the first leg of the quarter-final match against Arsenal. However, due to UEFA’s ban on their fans attending the game following incidents of fireworks being thrown onto the pitch in previous away games, there are concerns that German supporters may attempt to enter the stadium by purchasing tickets in the home end. Arsenal has taken measures to prevent this by restricting ticket sales to new members who registered after a specific date and implementing a ticket transfer service that only allows transfers to recipients with accounts created before the same date. The club has also warned that any season-ticket holder or member found to be in possession of an away fan will be suspended indefinitely.
In response to the ban, Bayern Munich has urged their fans not to travel to London. Only a limited number of tickets have been allocated to the Bundesliga club, with around 200 for friends and family and 20 for senior club officials. This comes at a time when Arsenal is aiming to reach a Champions League semi-final for the first time since 2009, but is facing the challenge of avenging their poor record against the German team, who have won the last three encounters 5-1. Bayern’s visit to London has been marred by disarray, following a recent 3-2 loss that has seen them fall further behind in the Bundesliga.
With their coach set to depart at the end of the season, European success remains their last hope of securing any silverware.
