Previously, Jermaine Jenas hosted the MOTDx show, a spin-off program for younger audiences that was canceled last season. He also worked for the BBC on Euro 2024 as a co-commentator for Spain’s semifinal victory over France. Following routine inquiries, Jenas’ contract was terminated, with the BBC’s new Director of Sport heavily involved in the process.
It is believed that Jenas will not be returning to the BBC in the future, and he had been paid between £190,000 and £194,999 for his roles there, according to official figures. There are claims that Jenas has parted ways with his long-term agents, as a result of the crisis, and he has been removed from their website. Jenas is thought to have instructed lawyers to clear his name, and it is unknown whether TNT are aware of his departure from the BBC or the reason behind it.
Jenas quickly moved into punditry following his retirement, after making 436 professional appearances for clubs during his 14-year senior career and earning 21 England caps. He then joined The One Show in 2020 and began co-presenting with Alex Jones, later becoming a permanent host. He also works as the main presenter for Formula E, but it is unknown if his departure from the BBC will affect that role.
Last December, Jenas was awarded a Doctor of Sport honorary degree by Nottingham Trent University. He is a father of four, and his BBC exit comes after an independent review into the broadcaster’s workplace culture was announced. Jenas had previously expressed his aspirations to host Match Of The Day, but now it seems his dream of replacing Lineker in the hotseat is unlikely to materialize.
He also mentioned that the BBC holds itself to the highest standards, but challenges related to workplace behavior need to be addressed.
