Ex-England player and Team GB Olympian Gemma Wiseman tragically took her own life, as ruled by a coroner. Her body was discovered in a park on the outskirts of Rackheath, Norfolk on December 16, by a member of the public.

An inquest into the death of the 33-year-old has been opened by the Norfolk Coroner’s Court and is scheduled to take place on July 29, 2024. The coroner revealed that Mrs. Wiseman had been medicated for depression and anxiety, and a therapeutic level of an antidepressant was found in her blood.

Notably, she had achieved success with England and Team GB, including winning a bronze at the 2013 Deaflympics in Bulgaria. In addition to her sporting accomplishments, she was a mother to a three-year-old and was married to Laura Wiseman, who was also part of the 2016 team.

Wiseman had also been involved in other activities, such as being a teaching assistant in Norwich and supporting the Norfolk FA’s first inclusive festival for girls, as well as playing for local clubs. A statement from her family emphasized that Gemma was a loving wife and a wonderful mother who always prioritized others.

Furthermore, Chloe Callaghan, in a statement read during the inquest, mentioned that in December 2013, Gemma had been very quiet and not her usual self, and had struggled with her mental health for several years. She also disclosed that Gemma had spoken to her about previous dark thoughts and an attempted overdose.

Mrs. Wiseman’s mother-in-law, Christine Wiseman, expressed that Gemma had been battling with her mental health since an interview she did in 2017.
