The Egypt Olympic boss, Rugero Micali, had hoped to convince Salah, aged 32, to join the team in Paris as one of the three over-23 players allowed. However, Salah decided against participating in Paris as it would have caused him to miss most of Liverpool’s pre-season, including the US tour.
Instead, he will be reporting back for pre-season training with Liverpool this weekend and will partake in the club’s tour of America. Micali acknowledged the difficulty of persuading Salah to join Egypt’s Olympic squad, expressing his desire for Salah to play at the Olympics before the decision was made.
Micali mentioned that they were considering 10 potential players and would select three from them, expressing his strong wish for Salah to be part of the team.
