Phil Foden, aged 24, has returned to the England camp following the birth of his third child. He flew back to England immediately after the draw with Slovenia and his partner, Rebecca Cooke, gave birth to a baby boy.
Consequently, Foden is expected to train on Friday and could potentially start in England’s last-16 tie with Slovakia on Sunday. Foden has started all three of England’s Group C matches and will rejoin the squad for the game against Slovakia.
During the group stage, Foden hit a post in the draw with Denmark and has shown glimpses of his talent without fully hitting the form he displayed for Manchester City last year. England manager Southgate is faced with the challenge of finding the right balance among his attacking options, as the team has scored only twice in three matches.
England has been without a natural left-back throughout the tournament, and the potential return of Shaw, either to start or as a substitute, would be a significant boost. Furthermore, the team will be returning to the Veltins Arena, where they secured their opening group-stage win over Serbia.
