UEFA have performed a major U-turn ahead of England’s last-16 match at Euro 2024 on Sunday. England returns to Gelsenkirchen this weekend, after playing their opening group game against Serbia there. The game was considered a “high-risk” fixture by German police, leading to restrictions on alcohol at the stadium. Consequently, many England fans experienced transport issues as they tried to reach the ground after partying elsewhere.
The FSA expressed frustration at the alcohol restrictions imposed on England fans and issued a statement highlighting the “serious issues in Gelsenkirchen” that affected fans’ travel plans following England’s 1-0 win over Serbia. The FSA further expressed dismay at the difficulties faced by fans, including being stranded for three hours after the game due to transportation problems. They emphasized the need for enhanced provisions and an urgent review of arrangements, especially with the potential for a repeat of the issues this weekend. Despite the earlier kickoff time, the possibility of extra time and penalties could lead to another late departure in darkness, requiring thorough preparations.
The FSA also stressed the need for lessons to be learnt and for authorities to respond with urgency, considering the inadequacy of the initial defensive response.
