The Three Lions have failed to inspire in both of their previous outings and have copped plenty of flack ahead of their trip to Cologne. Heading into the match, there are plenty of players with a point to prove. Here, *Mirror Football* identifies five England players who will have the bit between their teeth against Slovenia…
After being substituted in the final throes of a match with England chasing a goal, some fans have even questioned whether Kane should be replaced from the off after watching the striker struggle to get involved with play during both of England’s group matches. Kane’s game hasn’t changed (he’s always dropped deep) and such suggestions feel a tad over the top, but he’ll be determined to prove a point after being taken off by his manager against Denmark.
Unfortunately, he’s been fairly innocuous in both games. Cesc Fabregas went against the grain last week, suggesting that Foden needs to do more to showcase his best for England. Whatever the answer is, England need him firing. Southgate looks set to resist replacing Foden with an out-and-out winger like Anthony Gordon for the Slovenia match.
But Foden might not get another reprieve if he spends another match on the periphery. England’s midfield looked disjointed against Serbia and Denmark and while Trent Alexander-Arnold’s presence in the engine room has been fiercely debated, Rice was also a part of that unit. Some of the comments from James McClean criticising Rice this week border on the the bizarre. But even if they are outlandish, they have upped the pressure on Rice ahead of the Slovenia game, where he’ll be expected to up his game in a new look midfield.
Gallagher has replaced Alexander-Arnold in both group matches so far and will provide some of the zip and zest which has been sorely lacking in England’s recent performances.
