Turkey vs Georgia Game Escapes Postponement Amid Fan Violence and Heavy Rain – Mirror Online

The match between Turkey and Georgia at Euro 2024 proceeded as scheduled, despite initial concerns about potential postponement due to violent clashes between supporters and torrential rain. The game took place at Borussia Dortmund’s stadium, Westfalenstadion, at 5pm on Tuesday, though the lead-up to the match was marked by chaos.

Heavy rain caused water to pour from the stadium’s roof, prompting clashes among fans inside the stadium. This led UEFA to consider whether the match could proceed safely.

The turbulent weather inside the stadium intensified the sense of disorder, as ground staff worked to manage the water while Turkey and Georgia fans clashed. Fortunately, the weather eventually calmed down.

Meteorological warnings of severe weather conditions, including potential supercells, squalls, and large hail, along with threats of isolated tornadoes, added to the overall atmosphere of concern. Cologne, the host city for Scotland’s upcoming match with Switzerland, faced similar severe thunderstorm threats.

As a precaution, fan zones and viewing areas in various cities were closed. German meteorologist Dominik Jung emphasized the potential risks to life and advised fans to prioritize safety.

He highlighted the uncertainty of the affected regions but stressed the importance of staying informed and cautious. This message was specifically directed to the football community, with the assurance of special offers and promotions being extended while also providing the option to opt out of the community if desired.
