Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has been fined £20,000 and given a two-month suspended ban for admitting to breaching FA betting rules. In addition to the fine, he has been cautioned about his future behavior by the FA. The punishment, which is suspended for two months, means Sandro will not serve any part of the ban if he does not breach the FA Betting Rules during this period.
The FA recognized the extent of Sandro’s cooperation and self-referral in the investigation, describing it as extraordinary and unprecedented. Sandro fully admitted to his betting activity, even though there was no other evidence to support misconduct proceedings. The bets in question include an accumulator bet involving Newcastle, as well as a single bet on Newcastle to beat Manchester City.
Sandro stated that he could not recall the exact amounts wagered, but insisted that it would not exceed €10,000. He also acknowledged that he was aware of the rules prohibiting betting on English football, having received training from the FA. The Regulatory Commission commended Sandro’s assistance, stating that without his proactive involvement, the FA would not have had a case.
As a result of the ban and his previous absence from competitive action, Tonali is expected to return to football at the beginning of the next season.
