Wayne Rooney has landed a new role as a pundit on The Overlap, as officially announced by Fabrizio Romano in a social media video. The former footballer will be joining his friends and ex-teammates Gary Neville, Roy Keane, and others, and is set to make his debut on the show soon. Rooney later confirmed the news himself and expressed his excitement about joining Gary Neville and The Overlap team for appearances on their YouTube channel and podcast. The move to punditry comes after Rooney’s brief stint as manager of Birmingham earlier this year, where he struggled to achieve success.
Following his retirement from professional football in January 2021, Rooney had managerial spells at DC United and Derby before taking on the role at Birmingham. Prior to his new punditry position, he was set to make his debut on Match of the Day but had to pull out due to a back injury sustained while on holiday. Rooney’s involvement in The Overlap marks his entry into the world of sports punditry, following a turn as a guest on the show in March. He expressed disappointment at missing out on his Match of the Day debut but looks forward to future opportunities in the field.
