When Kevin Phillips arrived at the club, they were in 16th place and only four points above the drop. However, after winning seven of his 16 games in charge, he helped the club finish 12th.
Despite this, Hartlepool decided not to extend his contract and instead appointed Darren Sarll as their new manager. The chairman, Raj Singh, chose Sarll’s experience over Phillips’ potential, which disappointed former Soccer Saturday presenter, Stelling.
Stelling expressed his dismay on Twitter, praising Phillips’ impact and questioning the decision. Hartlepool announced the appointment of Sarll, emphasizing his experience and vision for the squad.
Club director Andy Steel highlighted Sarll’s knowledge of the National League and his ability to lead teams to play-offs, which were important criteria for the Board’s decision. Stelling continued to express his confusion and disappointment with the decision on Twitter, indicating that it was not Phillips’ decision to leave.
Phillips had previously managed South Shields, winning the Northern Premier League Premier Division in his second season. If you’re curious, you can read our Privacy Notice.
