Joel Matip is set to leave Liverpool once the season ends with Italian clubs interested in signing the defender, according to reports. The centre-half has been sidelined for a significant portion of the season due to a serious knee injury, which led to him being ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in December.
Consequently, he has been unable to showcase his value as his contract nears its conclusion. Both Italian clubs have expressed interest in acquiring Matip, but he is hesitant due to the potential pay cut he may have to take if he moves away from Anfield.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes that Matip’s dedicated service to the club warrants some compassion from the team as he goes through rehabilitation. Klopp expressed confidence that the club will support Matip during this time and stated that discussions regarding Matip’s future will be held in conjunction with the player.
In response to queries about whether this meant the club would offer Matip a new contract, Klopp suggested that it would likely be the case, although the final decision rests with the club. Liverpool is expected to undergo a transformation, with some aging squad members likely to depart.
