Josh Cavallo, an advocate for the LGBT+ community, has called for Premier League players to show more support for the community. He believes that captains wearing a Rainbow armband throughout the season would be a positive step.
Cavallo emphasized the importance of this gesture in promoting inclusivity and acceptance, especially for young individuals who may feel hesitant to participate in sports due to fear of not fitting in. He stressed the need for further actions and discussions beyond symbolic gestures, such as clubs taking on the responsibility to speak up on topics related to the LGBT+ community.
Cavallo praised Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson for not only wearing a Rainbow armband but also actively following up his actions with meaningful dialogue and advocacy. In contrast, Sheffield United skipper Anel Ahmedhodzic reportedly refused to wear a Rainbow armband during the Rainbow Laces period, a decision that Cavallo criticized as “disgusting” and hurtful to the LGBT+ community.
He expressed disappointment at the lack of realization by some players of the impact of their actions on the community they represent. Cavallo also highlighted the responsibilities that come with being a professional athlete and the influence their actions can have on marginalized communities.
He condemned the refusal to support the LGBT+ community as a display of not wanting to associate oneself with a certain group, which he finds personally hurtful and unacceptable.
