In a dramatic match, Joshua Kimmich’s 63rd-minute header secured a victory for the Bundesliga giants, allowing them to advance to the semi-final of Europe’s premier competition. Mikel Arteta’s team had arrived in Germany with an even footing, following a tense 2-2 draw at the Emirates a week prior. However, the north London side was unable to secure a win, resulting in their defeat and confirming the final European side to qualify for next year’s Club World Cup. The expanded format of the competition, which will take place in the United States in June and July 2025, will feature a total of 32 teams across six confederations.
Europe holds 12 spots for the event, with teams vying for a guaranteed place in the US. Arsenal’s failure to win the competition saw FC Salzburg rewarded for their performances. FIFA’s rule allows only two entries per country, with exceptions made for multiple continental champions. This rule enabled Salzburg to qualify, despite being ranked lower than teams such as Liverpool, Barcelona, and AC Milan.
Elsewhere, several teams earned their places in the tournament through regional competitions. Brazil’s success in the Copa Libertadores led to the qualification of Flamengo, Palmeiras, and Fluminense, with six teams from South America set to participate. Additionally, Seattle Sounders, Club Leon, and Monterrey will represent CONCACAF, while Al Ahly and Wydad will join from Egypt and Morocco respectively. Furthermore, Auckland City will fly the flag for Oceania, with nine more teams set to qualify for the tournament.
