The club’s owners, Knighthead Capital, have announced a transformative regeneration plan for the east side of Brum. They confirmed the purchase of 48 acres that was previously the site of the disused Birmingham Wheels on Monday night. The investment house shared their intentions to relocate the club as part of a sports’ quarter, aiming to elevate the Blues to the elite of English football.
Knighthead Capital co-owner and club chairman, Tom Wagner, explained that their vision extends beyond just a stadium, encompassing a sports’ quarter with various facilities and entertainment options. The plan includes the development of a training ground for both men’s and women’s teams, the academy, and potential entertainment concepts, such as hotels, restaurants, and other attractions, all within walking distance of the city center. Wagner expressed hope that the project would be completed within five years, acknowledging that this timeline might be optimistic.
The estimated investment for the project ranges between £2-3bn. He emphasized the importance of respecting the club’s history and the local community, striving for excellence in the development. The chairman emphasized that the infrastructure investment is intended to enhance the club’s performance on the pitch, driving success and ultimately benefiting both the club and its supporters.
When asked about the potential impact of relegation to League One on the project’s timescale, Wagner stated that it would not affect it at all.
