The 44-year-old recently represented the Reds in their showdown with a team of Ajax icons at Anfield. Unfortunately for Aurelio, his afternoon ended prematurely after getting injured in the first-half while attempting to block a shot from Kiki Musampa – landing him in hospital overnight. “You don’t expect an accident like that to happen in a Legends match, but when you go out there in front of 60,000 people, the competitive streak comes out.
“I couldn’t fly back last week because of the damage to my lung. At the start, the doctors said I would need to wait three weeks, so I was a bit scared, but the specialist saw the X-rays a few days ago and said it has settled down. The lung is OK and with the ribs, it’s just a matter of time for them to heal.
I feel much better now and I’ve been well looked after by the club. There’s always a good side to bad things. Apart from the accident, it’s been a fantastic trip.”
Aurelio, now 44, certainly looks different to the time he spent at Anfield.
The Brazilian can now boast a smart, swooped haircut, as well as some stubble. During his early time on Merseyside, Aurelio opted to shave his hair very short indeed. Unfortunately for supporters, they did not get to see him take to the pitch too often.
Across six years with the Reds, the defender made just 133 appearances – his opportunities often being limited by injury. After leaving Anfield, Aurelio returned to Brazil with Gremio. A serious knee injury limited him to just five appearances before he decided to retire.
Opening up about his near-constant injury issues, Aurelio added: “It was really difficult to deal with. It always seemed to catch me in moments where I was really improving and looked set to achieve bigger things.” We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
